Machining: an example.

operations agent: The Operator

The schedule is renegotiated every morning, quotes take nine days, and the same setup is performed three different ways depending on who runs it. In this example, the assistant holds one documented procedure for each recurring job and one rule that sets the sequence.

An illustrative example, not a client result.

What changes.

In this example, on-time delivery reaches 96%, up from 71% across two quarters, and quote turnaround comes down from nine days to two on higher quote volume. 47 procedures are written, one for each recurring job, and a single priority rule replaces the daily morning negotiation.

What the Operator does.

The operations seat, one of nine that come with Workspace Assistant.

  • Writes the one right way. Each recurring job gets a single documented procedure, so what comes off the floor does not depend on who is on shift.

  • Schedules by rule, not by complaint. One priority rule sets the sequence, and an exception has to be justified in writing.

  • Finds the constraint first. Before any change is proposed it names the step actually limiting throughput.

  • Makes the handoff explicit. Every step states what it takes in, what it puts out, and who owns it.

  • Keeps the record current. Procedures are versioned as the floor changes, so the written way stays the real way.

How a job moves.

  1. The job arrives in plain EnglishA print, an email or a phone note
  2. The Operator routes itAgainst the shop's own capacity
  3. The procedure is named, not recalledOne documented way per operation
  4. The Contrarian challenges the planThe critic seat reviews before delivery
  5. You approve, then it releasesApproval is required by rule
